How to pack a cooler that stays cold

  1. Pre-chill the coolerBring it down to temperature the night before with a spare pack inside. A warm cooler spends its first hours cooling itself instead of your food.
  2. Freeze the packs solidAllow a full 24 hours. A partly frozen pack is a partly useful pack.
  3. Load everything coldChill food and drinks before they go in. The packs are there to hold temperature, not pull it down.
  4. Fill the gapsAir is what warms a cooler. Use the smaller packs to close spaces between items.
  5. Finish on topCold sinks, so the largest mat goes across the top of the load, not underneath it.
  6. Keep it shutEvery opening costs you. If people are grazing, put drinks in a second cooler.

Common questions

How long do reusable ice packs stay cold?

It depends on the cooler, the ambient temperature and how often it gets opened. In a pre-chilled, well-packed cooler our Ice Mats typically outlast the same volume of loose ice by around 30%.

Can I use them alongside regular ice?

Yes, and it is a good combination. The packs hold the base temperature while ice fills the gaps, and you end up with far less meltwater than ice alone.

How long do they take to freeze?

Allow a full 24 hours for a solid freeze. Packs that go in partly frozen will not last a full trip.

Are they safe against food?

Yes. Every Icy Cools pack is BPA-free and non-toxic, and the outer film is made for contact with sealed food.

How many should I pack?

As a rough guide, one large mat plus two or three smaller packs suits a 40 to 50 quart cooler. Add more for multi-day trips or hot weather.
